Epson leaves well enough alone with its new Home Cinema projector lineup

DNP Epson

Epson has decided not to mess with success, as it's left the new Home Cinema 3020, 3020e, 5020, 5020e and Pro Home Cinema 6020 projectors largely untouched from last year. All the models still carry full 1080p resolution, active shutter 3D, 2D-to-3D conversion, WirelessHD and a pair of RF 3D glasses. There's a slight bump in brightness for the lower-end 3020/3020e models from 2,200 to 2,300 lumens and a 100,000:1 contrast hike for the 5020/5020e and 6020 models. Otherwise, the new projectors remain unchanged, right down to the colors, housings, 3LCD tech, 6,000 hour lamp and Fujinon Opticinema lenses for the 6020. Prices also carry over from the previous models, at under $4,000, $3,000 and $2,000 for the high- to low-end models, respectively. The projectors will start arriving in October and with little other competition in that price range, Epson can probably rest on its laurels -- at least for a while longer.

Wheeling and Dealing for New Domain Names ...

Entrepreneurs and big companies are battling one another for the rights to manage hot new Web address endings, including .app, .home and .book. Some are gathering in Prague this weekend, where they may decide to team up and pursue a contested domain together or duke it out.

Among them will be Bill Doshier of Conway, Ark., who hopes to meet his competition for the rights to .fun.

image

image

Mr. Doshier in April spent more than $500,000 to apply officially for the rights for the name as well as .buzz. He thinks he can sell the two domains to registrars such as GoDaddy.com LLC, which specialize in reselling website addresses, including secondary names?the words to the left of the dot. He believes people who list entertainment venues or promote parties online might have an interest in buying addresses such as parties.fun.

One big challenge for the 50-year-old former sales manager: He isn?t the only one trying to nab .fun.

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, or Icann, a nonprofit that regulates the Internet, last week disclosed the identities of the more than 800 applicants for new right-of-the-dot names.

Oriental Trading Company Inc., a party-supplies retailer, and Internet giant Google Inc.,

it turned out, had also put in applications for .fun. ?Fun is a better word than I initially gave it credit for,? said Mr. Doshier, who was heading to Prague. ?I?m in with some quality competition.?

In addition to the $500,000 of his own money for application fees and technology services and other expenses, Mr. Doshier lined up additional funding from private investors to cover the cost of managing and promoting the domains in the event he wins approval from Icann for either of them. ?My intentions are to be a part of .fun but I realize who I?m up against,? he said. ?I?m nervous.?

The gathering in Prague will be the second of three meetings Icann holds annually in different regions of the globe. The meetings, which are free and open to the public, offer participants a chance to air their opinions about the Internet, ask questions and receive updates from Icann about the organization itself.

But at this weekend?s meeting, many of those seeking the rights to contested domains say they intend to meet with their competitors. Some hope to discuss teaming up to reach arrangements where one party might agree to withdraw an application so that another technically would have the rights to manage the name in question. But they would work together to manage the name and share profits if Icann were to later approve the remaining application. It is also possible that some domain seekers will offer to pay their rivals to back out entirely. Icann, which awards domains based on applicants? qualifications and plans for using the domains, is expected to begin evaluating the applications next month. It is unclear when selections will be announced, according to Michele Jourdan, a spokeswoman for the nonprofit.

Icann doesn?t have any rules governing how applicants should or shouldn?t address competitors seeking the same domains. According to Ms. Jourdan, applicants can withdraw their submissions at any time and may be eligible for a partial refund depending on when they pull out. If Icann determines that more than one applicant is equally qualified to manage a particular domain, and none of the applicants seeking it bow out, a bidding auction will ensue. ?We encourage the applicants to work things out themselves,? says Ms. Jourdan, adding that going to auction should be ?a last resort.?

Businesses, nonprofits and government entities submitted a total of 1,930 applications for new Web address endings earlier this year for the latest application process. Dozens of domains received multiple applicants. The most popular include .app (13), .home (11) and .inc (11).

The application season, from January to May, was the first time in more than a decade that anyone could apply for a new top-level domain of just about any kind?domains the applicants themselves picked out, such as .pizza. The application fee was $185,000 per domain.

In the past, new domains like .net and .org haven?t exactly taken over the Internet, at least not with big companies and major players. Neither have .info., .mobi and .aero. Today there are roughly 102 million Web addresses ending in .com, followed by 14 million with .net, 10 million with .org and eight million with .info, according to Matthew Zook, the head of ZookNIC Internet Intelligence, an Internet research firm.

Google submitted applications for 101 domains, including trademarks like .google and names that ?have interesting or creative potential,? according to a company blog post published in late May. The Mountain View, Calif., concern declined to comment on its competition for some of the names it is seeking. Oriental TradingCompany declined to comment on competition for the .fun domain.

To some, the application period earlier this year was a golden opportunity to acquire domain names they could sell to registrars like GoDaddy or keep for themselves to create online businesses or expand existing ones.

Donuts Inc., an eight-person Bellevue, Wash., business, applied for 307 domains. The company was formed for the sole purpose of becoming a domain registry holder, as is true for many of the applicants. About half of the domains it is seeking are also being sought by others, including Microsoft Corp.

and L?Or?al

SA. Donuts was formed in early 2011 and has raised $100 million in investor capital, according to Daniel Schindler, 47, one of the firm?s four co-founders.

He said they all plan to attend the conference in Prague to meet with their domain-name rivals, several of which have already offered to pay Donuts to withdraw its applications for specific names. ?We?re not interested in getting paid off,? Mr. Schindler added. He declined to identify those who asked the firm to withdraw its requests.

Antony Van Couvering, chief executive of Top Level Domain Holdings Ltd. in Santa Monica, Calif., which is seeking 72 domains, said he is open to negotiations in Prague.

?We feel confident that we will be able to make deals with some of our contenders,? he said. What would consideration be? ?It may be a trade. It may be a money exchange. It may be cooperation,? he said.

Some are considering whether to team up with a competitor. ?It could make good business sense for both parties,? said John Styll, co-owner of Far Further LLC in Nashville, which is one of eight applicants vying for the domain name .music.

Far Further is run by Mr. Styll and founder Loren Balman, plus seven contract workers. The company formed in 1998 for the purpose of one day managing a top-level domain. It has no revenue, but it has raised more than $2 million in angel funding to cover the Icann application fee, salaries, consulting services and other expenses, according to Mr. Styll. It intends to sell .music addresses via registrars to anyone interested in using it to benefit the music industry.

Mr. Styll said Far Further is encouraging its supporters, mainly music associations, through social-media outlets to post a comment in favor of its bid for .music on Icann?s website.

Public comments can be posted about any of the applications for new domains between June 13 and August 12. The public can also file objections against applications in some cases, such as if the objectors own a trademark for a name an applicant is seeking.

Planet.eco LLC, a Stamford, Conn., company that applied for .eco, filed suit in a California district court in March against Top Level Domain Holdings and Big Room Inc. of Vancouver for using .eco in their marketing. Both defendants had announced their intent to apply for the .eco domain on their websites prior to the start of the application window. Both followed through on those intentions.

Jean William, co-founder of Planet.eco, said his company was formed in late 2011 when two other firms joined forces, one of which secured federal trademark protection for the term .eco in 2008, Mr. William said. Planet.eco, hasn?t decided yet if it will file an objection with Icann, Mr. William said.

Jacob Malthouse, co-founder of Big Room, said the lawsuit is ?without merit? and that the company doesn?t plan to pull out of the race for.eco, which has four competitors total. ?Over 50 environmental groups from around the world at the highest level support our application,? he added. Top Level declined to comment on the suit.

US military funded robotic 'cheetah' runs faster than Usain Bolt

Jamaican sprinter Bolt's current record of 27.8 miles per hour is the fastest a man has ever run, but the Pentagon-funded robot, dubbed Cheetah, managed to run at the speed of 28.3mph.

The Cheetah ? a quadrupedal machine built by Boston Dynamics and backed by Darpa, the US Defence Department's research division ? not only topped the Olympic 100m and 200m champion's record-setting time, it also beat its previous top speed of 18mph, set just six months ago.

However, the robot's developers qualified the achievement.

"To be fair, keep in mind that the Cheetah robot runs on a treadmill without wind drag and has an off-board power supply that it does not carry," Boston Dynamics said in a press release. "So Bolt is still the superior athlete."

"Our real goal is to create a robot that moves freely outdoors while it runs fast. We are building an outdoor version that we call Wildcat, that should be ready for testing early next year," Dr. Alfred Rizzi, the head of Cheetah programme, said in a statement.

According to the US Defence Department Cheetah is being developed for use on terrain where conventional wheels and tracks would struggle and will "contribute to emergency response, humanitarian assistance and other defence missions."

Powerful new explosive could replace today's state-of-the-art military explosive

Powerful new explosive could replace today's state-of-the-art military explosive [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 5-Sep-2012

Borrowing a technology used to improve the effectiveness of drugs, scientists are reporting discovery of a new explosive more powerful than the current state-of-the-art explosive used by the military, and just as safe for personnel to handle. Their report appears in ACS' journal Crystal Growth & Design.

Adam J. Matzger and colleagues explain that a technique for engineering medicines and other materials, termed cocrystallization, is attracting attention as a way to make improved explosives, rocket propellants and fireworks. Most solid materials consist of crystals with atoms and molecules arranged in a specific pattern that repeats itself time and again. Cocrystallization involves combining two materials into a new crystal architecture with the goal of producing an improved material.

They describe cocrystallization of the military's standard explosive, HMX, with a powerful explosive called CL-20, which the authors say is too prone to accidental detonation for military use. Mixing two parts CL-20 with one part HMX, however, produced a new explosive with a blast wave that would travel almost 225 miles per hour faster than that of the purest form of HMX, meaning a much more powerful blast. The new explosive, however, was as stable and resistant to accidental detonation as HMX. They suggest that it has the potential to replace HMX as the new state-of-the art military explosive.

Labor Day 2012: Jobs Debate A Convention Warm-Up

CHARLOTTE, N.C. ? On the eve of the Democratic National Convention, President Barack Obama declared that Republican rival Mitt Romney should be penalized for "unnecessary roughness" on the middle class and accused him in a ringing labor Day speech of backing higher taxes for millions after opposing the 2009 auto industry bailout.

"I've got one piece of advice for you about the Romney-Ryan game plan: Punt it away. It won't work. It won't win the game," Obama said, blending sports-themed remarks with economic barbs before a cheering crowd in the nation's industrial heartland.

He backed up his rally comments with a new television commercial that says Romney doesn't understand the "heavy load" the middle class is carrying yet wants to give himself a big new tax break. It's the president's first new ad since last week's Republican National Convention, a reminder that he and his allies have been outspent by millions in the ad wars over the past several weeks.

His sports comments in Toledo, Ohio, amounted to a rebuttal to Romney's weekend appeal to voters to fire the current coach ? Obama ? and install the Republicans instead at the controls of an economy sputtering along with 8.3 percent unemployment.

The president headed to hurricane-damaged Louisiana late in the day as he slowly made his way toward the Democrats' convention city. First lady Michelle Obama was already there, and made a quick trip to check out the stage at the Time Warner Cable Arena where she will speak on Tuesday night.

A few blocks from the hall where Democratic delegates will gather on Tuesday, union members staged a Labor Day march through downtown. Though supporting Obama, they also expressed frustration that he and the Democrats chose to hold their convention in a state that bans collective bargaining for teachers and other public employees.

There was disagreement among the ranks of the marchers. "I understand their frustration ... but do they really think they're going to be better off with Romney?" asked Phil Wheeler, 70, a delegate from Connecticut and a retired member of United Auto Workers Local 376 in Hartford.

Democrats chose the state to underscore their determination to contest it in the fall campaign. Obama carried North Carolina by 14,000 votes in 2008, but he faces a tough challenge this time given statewide unemployment of 9.6 percent in the most recent tabulation.

Romney relaxed at his lakeside home in New Hampshire with his family as Obama and running mate Joe Biden sought to motivate union voters to support them in difficult economic times. Romney took a mid-morning boat ride, pulling up to a dock to fuel up his 29-foot Sea Ray and pick up a jet ski that had been in for repairs.

In a statement emailed to reporters before he left his house, the businessman-turned-political candidate said: "For far too many Americans, today is another day of worrying when their next paycheck will come."

Campaigning on Saturday in Cincinnati, Romney likened Obama to a football coach with a record of 0 and 23 million, a reference to the number of unemployed and underemployed Americans.

Obama rebutted him 48 hours later ? and play by play.

"On first down he hikes taxes by nearly $2,000 on the average family with kids in order to pay for massive tax cuts for multimillionaires. ... Sounds like unnecessary roughness to me," he said.

"On second down he calls an audible and undoes reforms that are there to prevent another financial crisis and bank bailout. ...

"And then on third down, he calls for a hail Mary, ending Medicare as we know it by giving seniors a voucher that leaves them to pay any additional cost out of their pockets. But there's a flag on the play: Loss of up to an additional $6,400 a year for the same benefits you get now."

Romney denies that his plan to help the economy and reduce federal deficits will result in higher taxes for the middle class. But he has yet to provide enough detail to refute the claim, and Obama's assertion rests on a study by the non-partisan Tax Policy Center.

As for the auto bailout that he backed and Romney opposed, Obama told the audience, "Three years later, the American auto industry has come roaring back. Nearly 250,000 new jobs."

Obama's new campaign commercial said that under Romney's "a middle class family will pay an average of up to $2,000 more a year taxes, while at the same time giving multimillionaires like himself a $250,000 tax cut."

Aides said it would air in Colorado, Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada, Ohio and Virginia, the by-now familiar list of battleground states where the 2012 race for the White House is likely to be decided.

The president and aides have acknowledged for weeks that they and the groups supporting them are likely to be outspent by Romney, and recent figures say that has been the case in television advertising in the battleground states for much of the past two months.

Republican strategists contend that they have used the advantage to begin to erode Obama's job favorability ratings, but declined to provide any polling results to support the assertion.

At the same time, reports by firms that track advertising show that Republicans hope to expand the campaign battleground into Wisconsin, Michigan and possibly Pennsylvania and Minnesota. An effective ad campaign there in such states could force Obama to divert resources from other states to defend turf he has long assumed would be his with relative ease.

Republicans ramped up their counter-programming as the opening of the Democrats' convention approached.

"People are not better off than they were four years ago. After another four years of this, who knows what it'll look like then," said Republican vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan, campaigning in Greenville, N.C. "We're not going to let that happen."

Obama's top campaign surrogates had flinched from saying on Sunday that the average American is better off than four years ago, but they ? and Biden ? hastily recalibrated their response overnight.

"You want to know whether we're better off? I've got a little bumper sticker for you: `Osama bin Laden is dead and General Motors is alive,'" Biden told a campaign crowd in Detroit, the city that for generations has been synonymous with the American auto industry.

Pets and More Pets ? Building a first aid kit for the dog

A well stocked medicine cabinet is a very necessary accouterment in every home especially when there are children and senior members of the family. Children are most prone to accidents and senior citizens are commonly weighed down with various health concerns. With a medicine chest ailing members of the family can receive emergency care. The same thing applies to pets. Dogs are as well prone to accidents because of their very energetic and inquisitive nature. With the right equipments and the appropriate medicines, a dog owner can administer first aid to the pet. Emergency care using the first aid kit will not only prevent the worsening of the pet?s condition but in a lot of cases save the life of the pet.

It pays to be prepared for any emergency. When it comes to the care needed, dogs are comparable to babies thus a first aid kit will be very necessary. A veterinary facility next door should not be a reason for a pet owner not to get a first aid kit. A vet consult for minor injuries would be very costly. A vet will not be available at all times.

A dog owner equipped with a first aid kit can give the pet emergency care anywhere and anytime of the day. Dogs are wonderful buddies thus they are taken anywhere the master goes. In the wild or in far flung places where no veterinary facility is nearby, a well stocked medicine kit in the car can save the life of an injured pet.

A pet owner can buy a ready made first aid kit for the dog or build a customized kit that will be most suited to the lifestyle. For instance, the first aid kit of a pet owner that lives in the city where animal clinics are nearby would have different contents from the kit of a pet parent that customarily takes the dog hunting or camping in the wilderness.

Scissors, rectal thermometer, swabs and cotton balls, leash and muzzle are necessary equipments that a first aid kit should have. A dog?s first aid kit should contain different sizes of bandaging materials. The kit should contain antibiotics ointments for the skin and for the eyes, wound disinfectants, antidiarrhea and antihistamines. Activated charcoal and hydrogen peroxide would be very necessary because dogs are prone to ingesting poisonous substances. Along with the equipments and basic medications, a first aid kit for the pet has to have the phone numbers of the vet or the location of a veterinary facility.

What to Look For in a Food Processor | Content for Reprint

Author: Lawrence Reaves | Total views: 144 Comments: 0
Word Count: 721 Date:

So when you're making the list of what you absolutely must have in the kitchen, you're likely to ask yourself, "Do I really need a food processor?" Reality is, it's not a kitchen essential, but a good, dependable food processor can save you time and give you more cooking options in your kitchen.

A food processor is an investment, and if you plan to get a quality model, you'll have to spend some money. So ask yourself these questions before you go shopping.

Do you do a lot of chopping, slicing, shredding or mincing in your cooking? Doing this by hand can tend to get old.

Do you like to make your own homemade salsas and dips?

Would you use a food processor at least once a month?

How about storage space? Either on your kitchen counter or in a cabinet. Generally you need 1 to 1 ? cubic feet of space for a food processor.

You can use a food processor if you don't have a dishwasher. But keeping the unit clean is important. And a dishwasher provides an added bonus with a food processor because you don't have to wash the really sharp edged blades by hand.

Answering yes to three or more of those questions probably means you could get good, regular use out of a food processor and it would be a worthwhile investment.

You're probably wondering why you can't just use your blender for all of these functions.

Blenders are shaped with a conical bottom and require at least some liquid to keep the food moving through the blades. A food processor doesn't require liquid and in fact functions better without it.

All food processors perform the same basic tasks. But consider these options when looking to purchase.

A unit with a heavier chassis will help keep your appliance from moving or "walking" during the heavy-duty jobs.

You probably want to look for a model with large capacity, at least nine cups. Also a wider feeder tube will allow you to push through larger pieces of food, although it's generally a good idea to chop food into smaller pieces.

Make sure the safety features lock the bowl into place. Also make sure the top locks onto the bowl. You want a unit that will not function unless it is locked together securely.

You can find models that have a variety of speeds. But in using a food processor, the processing happens very quickly. All you really need are on, off and pulse.

The essential attachments will come with your appliance. Those will likely include a stainless steel S-shaped chopping/mincing/pureeing blade, a plastic dough blade and slicer/grater discs. You can add other attachments, but they're not essential. But some models will come with a smaller 2 or 4 cup mini bowl and blade. This works well for processing small amounts of food such as herbs used in a garnish.

A continuous feed slicer/shredder is an extra attachment that will allow you to slice or shred as many vegetables or as much cheese as you want without having to stop and frequently empty the bowl. The processed food is directed through a chute to another bowl instead of into the integrated work bowl.

One thing to look for is a touch pad for controls. This is easier to keep clean than a model with raised buttons where the inevitable spill can get trapped between the cracks and crevices.

You want to make sure you purchase a unit with enough power to get the job done. Larger units will obviously need more power to knead bread dough or cut through hard vegetables. On the average, you'll want to look for at least 400 watts of power. Professional units may have 750 watts or more. That's more than enough to handle any food preparation.

The biggest selling point for a food processor is its ability to replace a variety of other kitchen gadgets. When used properly it can function as a knife, it can knead dough, blend ingredients or act as a juicer. All of these can enhance your kitchen cooking experience.

Lawrence Reaves is a freelance writer who enjoys writing about food and cooking. He likes to collect kitchen appliances so that he is always prepared to make some of the best recipes. He recently purchased a new food processor from here that helps to get the recipes done faster.

Sources claim Sharp's production of iPhone screen delayed

Not even a full moon cycle has passed since Sharp's president, Takashi Okuda, trumpeted the fact that his firm was one of the chosen few selected to provide screens for the new iPhone. Now, according to Reuters the troubled company has slipped behind on production, with The Wall Street Journal going as far to say mass production hasn't started at all. The nearest thing to a reason given for the situation is "manufacturing difficulties." If you were worried this might delay the reveal of Apple's next flagship, the WSJ also reminds us that Sharp is still one of three suppliers, though it's unclear just how big a slice of the production-pie Okuda's brigade has been given. At the very least, those on the production line can likely enjoy some much appreciated overtime.

Internet Marketing Cheet Sheet | David Wood's MLM Marketing ...

Internet Marketing Cheat Sheet

If you?ve been marketing online for any length of time; I?m sure you?ve figured out that Internet Marketing isn?t exactly fair. You?ve probably noticed how some marketers are swimming in traffic & sales, travelling the world and turning everything they touch into gold. While others?

Well, they work much harder, have better products, more passion and for some reason are permanently broke. It?s simply because they haven?t quite figured it out yet. They haven?t quite figured out what the gurus are doing differently.

Most of the time limited success comes down to limiting beliefs; but that?s a blog post for another day. In this post, I want to give you an upper hand, a competitive edge over your competitors with this Internet Marketing?cheat?sheet:

?1. It?s All About Who You Know

Cliche, I know? but it?s evidently true. If you associate with struggling marketers like yourself; you?re probably going to remain in the same situation you are in now. At all times, you should associate and network with marketers greater than yourself.

By networking with bigger and smarter Internet Marketers, new opportunities will arrise. It wasn?t until I started networking that I had my first huge success. I made friends with a guy who had a very substantial customer base. We made a deal where I?d create an info product teaching them my marketing strategy, we?d launch it to his customers and split the profits.

That tiny product launch was my first real success, it built me a presence that took me to new heights. The big guys in this industry know all the highly influencial people. Which means they have the ability to launch any new product, service, brand or idea to thousands upon thousands of thousands at the snap of their fingers.

2. Speed

The Internet Marketing space moves incredibly fast. If you take too launching a product or service; your strategies/tools can become outdated.

I know a guy who spent 5 months developing an SEO plugin for WordPress. By the fifth month, he?d been hit by 2 Google updates which really damaged the effectiveness of his plugin. It took him months to re-build his plugin. Something he wouldn?t have had to do if he acted quicker.

When you?re building your business on your own, you need to operate under immense speed and pressure. All the time you?re working whilst flying solo is a complete waste. When you have no contacts or money to build a team, it?s the only option.

Work quickly and as much as you can until you can build your team.

3. Team Delegation

Once you?ve made enough money flying solo; you need to start putting a team together. Every great Internet Marketer has an entire team of staff; usually across the globe. You need at the very least:

  • An Assistant (To run errands, do annoying tasks you would otherwise do)
  • A Web Developer (Someone with excellent web skills to build sites & deal with everything technical)
  • Copywriter
  • Graphic Designer
  • Manager (Someone to manage your team)
  • Virtual Assistants (General staff to send your work to)

Once you have a team, you just need to focus on new ideas and projects to have your team work on. Teams are behind every great company and Internet Marketer. Never try and do everything yourself. Hire a team out of pocket if you have to; you?ll make the money back many times over in the near future.

4. Outsourcing

There are just so many?menial tasks and jobs involved in Online Marketing. Like creating accounts, writing articles, doing SEO, setting up campaigns and customer support.

Whenever you receive a big time consuming task; outsource it. So many marketers attempt to learn all these new skills so they can do everything themselves. You don?t need to be a great writer or SEO guru to make it in this business.

Outsource tasks and on-going jobs to freelancers, companies or services who know what they?re doing.

5. Scale

Scalability is the trick to making millions online. If you can?t scale your business when it?s working; shut it down. My personal joy of online marketing is scaling traffic.

Whenever I find a traffic source that converts fantastically with my offer; I?ll ensure my system can take A LOT more orders. Then I?ll turn up the knob on the traffic source and the sales will fly in.

It?s difficult to scale free traffic like SEO or article?marketing. Every article you distribute and keyword you target will respond differently. With paid traffic (like Facebook PPC), you enter the demographics for a certain campaign and when that campaign performs well; you increase its budget.

This also applies to the internal components of your business. Analyze your business, find its best performing and components and scale them!

In Prosperity,

David Wood

Waters recede in La., leaving sopping mess

BELLE CHASE, La. (AP) ? Floodwaters from Isaac receded, power came on and businesses opened Friday ahead of the holiday weekend, the beginning of what is certain to be a slow recovery for Louisiana.

Newly nominated Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney visited flood-ravaged communities, and President Barack Obama said he would arrive Monday, appearances this part of the country is all too familiar with after Katrina and the Gulf oil spill.

Meanwhile, the leftovers from the storm pushed into the drought-stricken Midwest, knocking out power to thousands of people in Arkansas. At least seven people were killed in the storm in Mississippi and Louisiana.

In Lafitte, a fishing village south of New Orleans, Romney saw soaked homes, roads covered with brown water and debris-littered neighborhoods. The GOP-friendly community is outside of the federal levee system that spared New Orleans and it lies on an exposed stretch of land near the Gulf.

Romney met along a highway with Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, and they talked about challenges facing the stricken area, which relies on fishing for its livelihood. He also spoke to town officials and emergency workers.

"I'm here to learn and obviously to draw some attention to what's going on here," Romney told the governor. "So that people around the country know that people down here need help."

At one point, Romney and Jindal talked to a man in waders and a straw hat holding a handwritten, neon- yellow "Mitt Is Our Man" sign. The man complained about the area's lack of protection from flooding.

The town is located just outside a region that is protected by levees and other flood protection measures built after Hurricane Katrina battered New Orleans in 2005. The Army Corps of Engineers spent about $13 billion on the system.

Richard Riley rode out the storm in his home. Even though the water was receding Friday, he decided it was time to leave. He walked about a mile and found rescuers, who took him to family members.

Riley, a Republican, said he favored building new flood protection for the area, especially after Isaac brought in a surprising amount of water. He said he wanted Obama to help make that happen.

"He needs to see the devastation and allocate the money that's needed to build new levees or do whatever is needed to protect us," Riley said.

Crown Point, Lafitte and other nearby settlements that jut inland from the Gulf are accustomed to high water driven by hurricanes. But Isaac, a relatively weak storm by the standards of Betsy and Katrina, pushed in much more water than expected when it stalled after making landfall.

To the east, officials pumped and released water from a reservoir, easing the pressure behind an Isaac-stressed dam in Mississippi on the Louisiana border. The threat for the earthen dam on Lake Tangipahoa prompted evacuations in small towns and rural areas.

In New Orleans, at the Magnolia Discount Gas Station in the Carrollton neighborhood, employee Gadeaon Fentessa said up to 50 drivers an hour were pulling in, hopeful they could pump. He had the gas, but no power. Stations that did have power to pump had long lines.

There were other signs of life getting back to some sense of normalcy. The Mississippi River opened to limited traffic, the French Quarter rekindled its lively spirit and restaurants reopened.

Isaac dumped as much as 16 inches of rain in some areas, and about 500 people had to be rescued by boat or high-water vehicles. More than 5,000 people were still staying in shelters.

The remainder of the storm was still a powerful system carrying rain and the threat of flash flooding as it headed across Arkansas into Missouri and then up the Ohio River valley over the weekend, the National Weather Service said.

Labor Day plans were already taking a hit.

Oleg Shneper, manager of the Extended Stay America hotel in the Cincinnati suburb of Blue Ash, said occupancy was down about 10 percent already.

His hotel usually gets business travelers and a lot of people visiting nearby Kings Island amusement park in Mason.

"People have called to say they can't get here because the rain is keeping them from getting out of airports," he said. "We're also definitely not seeing as much family traffic."

Farther south, the storm victims included a man and a woman discovered late Thursday in a home in the hard-hit town of Braithwaite, south of New Orleans; a man killed in a restaurant fire; two men killed in separate car accidents, a woman whose car was hit by a tree and a man who fell from a tree.

In Louisiana alone, the storm cut power to 901,000 homes and businesses, or about 47 percent of the state, but that had decreased to 617,000.

More than 15,000 utility workers began restoring power to customers in Louisiana and Mississippi, but officials said it would be a couple of days before power was fully restored.

Crews intentionally breached a levee that was strained by Isaac's floodwaters in southeast Louisiana's Plaquemines Parish, which is outside the federal levee system. Parish President Billy Nungesser said the work was slow-going. Workers were only able to reach one spot, he said, and 10 to 12 cuts were planned. The levee is cut as the tide goes out, he said, then patched while the tide comes back.

In Mississippi's Bay St. Louis, Allen Barrilleaux, spent Friday morning draining water from the engine of his flooded truck not far from a river.

He had planned to ride out the storm with his wife, a friend, and 5-week-old son in their house, which is on stilts, but called for help Wednesday when the water came closer and large pine trees from a nearby mill swirled in the water. They were evacuated by boat.

Watching for ant beds as he walked around his green Chevy, Barrilleaux said hurricanes are part of life here, but disasters can hit anywhere.

"Life's cruel," Barrilleaux said, gripping a wrench with a greasy hand. Then he smiled.

"We're like that big old ant hill and a guy with a lawnmower just keeps mowing us down."

During 1862, while the Civil War raged across the country, Scientific American periodically covered inventions that were designed to help some aspect of the military effort. Some were considered to be patentable but were in reality perfectly useless, while others were harbingers of how war was to be fought down through the next century and a half.

These inventions from 1862 came from some of the best minds in the business of military technology. A few of them, unfortunately, came from some of most clueless brains.

VP pick Ryan brings long record to dissect

(AP) ? Rep. Paul Ryan's record runs deeper than his signature budget and Medicare ideas.

Mitt Romney's running mate is against abortion rights, has a top rating from gun-rights groups and backed sending troops to the wars. But in conflict with fellow Republicans, he's defended wage laws favored by unions. And he supported the auto industry bailout opposed by Romney and the bank bailout that the party's right flank now opposes.

Ryan's 14 years in Congress leave a long trail of votes for Democrats to pick apart, a process that began with gusto as Romney announced his choice Saturday.

Ryan's intense interest in fiscal issues ? he holds a degree in economics and chairs the House Budget Committee ? helps explain why those matters define him in Washington. But Ryan has always been a reliable vote on proposals dear to social conservatives, enough to earn him a perfect score from a key anti-abortion group back home.

This year, Republicans rallied behind his debt and deficit prescription to curtail federal spending on food stamps, Pell Grants for education and other programs. His debt-reduction proposal calls for cuts in personal and corporate tax rates, but also would pare back deductions and preferences that litter the tax code. So far, it has been little more than a GOP wish list that passed the Republican-led House but hasn't passed the Democratic-controlled Senate.

Ryan wants to fashion Medicare into a plan more like a 401(K), steering future retirees into private insurance plans, with a fixed payment from the government that may or may not cover as much of a retiree's costs as does the current program. It departs from the current "fee for service" framework in which the government pays doctor and hospital bills.

That's a marked shift in the social compact and not the only one he proposes. Ryan also wants to shift Medicaid to the states and sharply limit the growth of federal spending on that program. Medicare and Medicaid together reach some 100 million people.

His votes in Congress have gone against the grain at times. When Republicans have attempted to repeal federal wage protection laws for unions, Ryan has sided with Democrats in opposition. Even so, Ryan ardently campaigned for Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, who fended off a recall attempt spurred by state law changes cast as anti-union.

Ryan, whose district lost General Motors assembly plant a couple of years ago, supported the multi-billion dollar auto industry bailout started under then-Republican President George W. Bush and continued under President Barack Obama. Romney famously penned an opinion piece in 2008 with the headline, "Let Detroit Go Bankrupt," arguing automakers could have gone through a managed bankruptcy and re-emerged without such massive help from taxpayers.

But there's no question that his budget and Medicare plan stand among the boldest ideas in Washington and present the fattest target for Democrats. Mindful of such sensitivities, Romney campaign adviser Ed Gillespie emphasized Sunday that as president, Romney "would be putting forward his own budget" as much as he admires Ryan's, making clear the presidential hopeful is not wedded to his running mate's proposals.

In taking his place on the ticket, Ryan lamented a Washington culture of timidity on the pressing issues of the time.

"We're running out of time ? and we can't afford four more years of this," Ryan said as Romney looked on. "Politicians from both parties have made empty promises which will soon become broken promises ? with painful consequences ? if we fail to act now."

Obama's campaign said Ryan's ideas were the potentially painful ones.

"In naming Congressman Paul Ryan, Mitt Romney has chosen a leader of the House Republicans who shares his commitment to the flawed theory that new budget-busting tax cuts for the wealthy, while placing greater burdens on the middle class and seniors, will somehow deliver a stronger economy," said Obama campaign manager Jim Messina.

Ryan has taken thousands of recorded votes since coming to Congress in 1999, a minefield for any candidate let alone one aspiring to the White House.

Ryan also signed his name to 1,064 bills and resolutions over that span. Many deal with eye-glazing tax policy. Others aim to restrict abortion procedures. He's made a recurring push for line-item veto powers to restrain spending.

Despite voting solidly against abortion rights, he's given little indication, especially in recent years, that he wants to go to the ramparts on the issue. His litmus test has been budget matters, and he's been known to endorse candidates who see abortion differently, saying he is willing to agree to disagree "with mutual respect."

In 2009, he voted to prohibit federal money from being used to pay for an abortion or for any part of a health plan that covers abortion ? except when the abortion results from rape or incest or when the pregnancy threatens the woman's life.

Many years earlier, he backed bans on so-called partial birth abortion that made an exception for the life of the mother, but not for rape or incest.

A number of his legislative actions qualify as parochial measures. For instance, he's sponsored legislation to modify tax treatment of archery equipment and ease tariffs on motorcycle wheels, clearly a nod to Harley-Davidson Motor Co.'s Wisconsin base.

The local touches don't impress Ryan opponents, who say he's padded his national reputation at the expense of his district.

State Rep. Peter Barca, a Democratic former congressman from southeastern Wisconsin, criticized Ryan's record and proposals as inconsistent with the pulse of the area he represents.

"He's an articulate, good-looking guy," Barca said. "He'd talk like a moderate in Wisconsin but it wasn't until his last budget that people saw how extreme his views are."

Still, Ryan has won seven congressional elections, most handily. He has never run statewide, meaning the campaign to snatch the Wisconsin electoral votes that went to President Barack Obama last time will be a test of his appeal beyond his back yard.
