A well stocked medicine cabinet is a very necessary accouterment in every home especially when there are children and senior members of the family. Children are most prone to accidents and senior citizens are commonly weighed down with various health concerns. With a medicine chest ailing members of the family can receive emergency care. The same thing applies to pets. Dogs are as well prone to accidents because of their very energetic and inquisitive nature. With the right equipments and the appropriate medicines, a dog owner can administer first aid to the pet. Emergency care using the first aid kit will not only prevent the worsening of the pet?s condition but in a lot of cases save the life of the pet.

It pays to be prepared for any emergency. When it comes to the care needed, dogs are comparable to babies thus a first aid kit will be very necessary. A veterinary facility next door should not be a reason for a pet owner not to get a first aid kit. A vet consult for minor injuries would be very costly. A vet will not be available at all times.

A dog owner equipped with a first aid kit can give the pet emergency care anywhere and anytime of the day. Dogs are wonderful buddies thus they are taken anywhere the master goes. In the wild or in far flung places where no veterinary facility is nearby, a well stocked medicine kit in the car can save the life of an injured pet.

A pet owner can buy a ready made first aid kit for the dog or build a customized kit that will be most suited to the lifestyle. For instance, the first aid kit of a pet owner that lives in the city where animal clinics are nearby would have different contents from the kit of a pet parent that customarily takes the dog hunting or camping in the wilderness.

Scissors, rectal thermometer, swabs and cotton balls, leash and muzzle are necessary equipments that a first aid kit should have. A dog?s first aid kit should contain different sizes of bandaging materials. The kit should contain antibiotics ointments for the skin and for the eyes, wound disinfectants, antidiarrhea and antihistamines. Activated charcoal and hydrogen peroxide would be very necessary because dogs are prone to ingesting poisonous substances. Along with the equipments and basic medications, a first aid kit for the pet has to have the phone numbers of the vet or the location of a veterinary facility.
